A New Era of Tiempo: Introducing the Maestro and Ligera
The dawn of a new era is here as Nike officially launched the latest evolution of its most iconic and longest running silo: the Nike Tiempo. In December we got to take a quick look at what this new era of Tiempo would be but now the cleats have made it online and in stores. Contrary to tradition the all new Tiempo features not one, but two distinct and powerful options: the Tiempo Maestro and the Tiempo Ligera.
Each Tiempo sports the iconic Tiempo DNA but offers two very different footwear philosophies. Why did Nike give you two different options when it comes to the Tiempo? Let’s break it down.
Heritage and History
When you think about some of the most iconic moments in soccer history, the Nike Tiempo has been there through it all. Introduced in the early 1990s, the Tiempo really became an icon in the early 2000s worn by icons like Pirlo, Totti, and most notably Ronaldinho. The icons of the game truly represented what the Tiempo was all about; touch, control, and feel with speed unlike any other.
However, as the game evolved so did the identity of one of soccer’s most iconic cleats. Known as the dependable and safe option for players, most notably and frequently defenders, the identity of the Tiempo was vastly different than when it first came to the pitch. With the rise of Speed boots and lightweight options, the Tiempo faded to the back. Never truly exciting, but always trusted by those who wore it.
The Tiempo Maestro is here to rewrite this narrative.
Nike Tiempo Maestro: A Cultural Reset

Sleek, modern, and a break from tradition. The Nike Tiempo Maestro is a very bold and exciting reset for the silo that so desperately needed it. The Maestro offers players a much more modern and sculpted design which is far different from the bulky leather boots that have become synonymous with the Tiempo name. While the Tiempo Maestro does not give players a traditional leather, you get a reimagined Nike TechLeather upper that gives players a premium and leather-like feeling while also being far lighter and more consistent in all the conditions of the game.
The upper wrap of the Maestro ensures that the reimagined split sole plate design is less bulky and the upper can spread across the boots much further than ever before. You now get a more snug fit in the cleats that allows creative players to mover more fluidly with agile, control, and speed. Perfect for the most creative players of the game, the Maestro is what the Tiempo initially stood for.
Nike Tiempo Ligera: Traditional, Modern, Dominant

Tiempo loyalists get the bold iconic design that they have always known and loved with subtle tech updates that push their game to the future with the Tiempo Ligera. This lightweight yet super traditional take on the iconic silo gives players who value tradition, simplicity, and performance one powerful and dominant pair of cleats. While the Ligera is nearly $100 less than the modern Tiempo Maestro, nothing about this boot gives you take down cleat feelings.
The Ligera also features the same Nike TechLeather as the Maestro but the build and design of the Ligera is much more familiar to Tiempo loyalists. Players still get a traditional stitched forefoot that gives you a controlled touch and space between your foot and the ball. A classic full length sole plate pairs with traditional conical studs for enhanced traction, stability, and all around grounded feel on the ball.
The Return of the Fold-Over Tongue
If you’ve been keeping an eye on soccer cleat design over the past decade, the Fold-Over tongue has been at the center of a heated debate: classic or necessary? For some the fold-over tongue brings nostalgia and history back to the field and for others it adds an extra piece of functionality to their already dominant and high-powered boots. Classic Tiempo models featured the FT design but on a modern style like the Maestro it simply does not fit.
While the fold-over tongue is making it’s return on the Tiempo Ligera, it appears that there are going to be iterations of this classically inspired boot without the FT feature. Stars like Virgil van Dijk have been the face of the iconic Tiempo and now the all-new Ligera, but notoriously despise the FT feature. van Dijk has recently been spotted without the fold-over tongue which leads Tiempo fans to believe that Ligera will feature both a FT and non-FT fit.
